Gen Y surgery obsession
The news that actress Charice Pempengco, 18, had Botox to look 'fresh' for her role on Glee has shocked even industry insiders. Grazia investigates the disturbing trend of teen and twentysomething cosmetic surgery.
Even by Hollywood standards, it was a shocking admission. A huge outcry erupted recently after 18-year-old Glee actress Charice Pempengco was filmed having multiple Botox injections along her jawline so she could, in her own words,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "look fresh on camera". The teenager also had Thermage treatment to tighten her skin ahead of the show's new season.
Of course LA actresses having cosmetic surgery is nothing new, but the age at which both celebrities and ordinary women are starting treatments is growing ever younger.
A new generation of teenagers and twentysomethings believe they can not only delay the ageing process but actually prevent it altogether. And there are surgeons who are only too happy to help them.
Heidi Montag,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 23, famously had 10 procedures in 10 hours including a brow lift, chin reduction,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Botox,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], breast enhancement and liposuction. "Every starlet is getting surgery every other day to keep their looks up, they just don't talk about it," she has said. "I wanted to be honest."
And she's not alone. Her co-star on The Hills Lo Bosworth,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 23, is rumoured to have had Botox and fillers; Lindsay Lohan, 24, started the day she was sent to jail by getting lip fillers; Julia Roberts' 19-year-old niece Emma was snapped leaving a medical centre on a Beverly Hills street crammed with cosmetic surgeons last year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while Alexa Ray Joel, 24,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], had a nose job at the same time as her mother Christie Brinkley was said to have had a facelift.
And cosmetic surgery is no longer just an option for the rich or famous. In the US, patients aged 19 to 34 account for 20 per cent of all Botox procedures and chemical peels, and high school students now regularly ask their parents for cosmetic surgery as a graduation gift. More than 9000 breast enhancement operations are carried out every year on patients aged 13 to 19.

My mother always taught me to try and love and accept what physical features i possess that may be different and not considered classically beautiful, because that's what makes you who you are! I have pale skin, freckles, curly hair, and I dont always like my boobs (be more perky you damn bags of fun!) but i would NEVER get surgery to correct any of these things. and if you want to look fresh - nothing beats a good nights sleep. not a needle in your face. we need to stop being so scared of aging!!! its going to happen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], its inevitalbe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], try to do with a little class and elegance and without looking like a *** up doll.
Charice Pempengco's cosmetic surgery has made her look 10 years older at least,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and sunburnt. This example of chemical alteration of women's bodies is but the latest example in a long litany of abuses women must endure to be of an acceptable appearance. Women are never skinny enough, breasts are never big enough,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and they can never be young enough,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], indeed they can never have the right appearance. The message women are always receiving (from the visual and print media),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is that their self-worth lies in their "fuckability rating",[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and that concern with this should be their top priority. Hence the increased numbers of breast enhancements,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and all manner of other physical alterations. Charice Pempengco's cosmetic surgery is a very revealing reflection on how Western society is destroying women from the inside by attacking their very self-worth.
