A black plague has descended on the Internet bringing with it computer viruses, pornography and mass marketing messages you don't want to see. It's called spam, e-mails you didn't invite from people you do not know and, according to Internet monitoring companies, it now is really a quarter of all e-mail traffic in Australia.
But we get off lightly. In america and Britain, the experts say, half of all e-mail traffic is now spam. It's a torrent of cybergarbage that floods the global telecommunications system and threatens the viability of legitimate e-commerce - which is getting worse.
The best advice, based on the experts, is not to spread out messages from people you do not know or recognise - especially not messages promising to help you rich, enable you to get cheap Viagra, or sell you a surefire method to enlarge your breasts or your penis.
Some spam is comparatively innocuous - ads for cheap shoes, a better, spill-proof pasta pot, low-interest auto loans - but a lot of it's dubious if not downright fraudulent. Some e-mails offer credit cards from unknown "banks" that do not require credit report checks, "just send us your bank account number".
Spammers also promote spam. A current mass mailing purporting to come from an Anne L. McClenaghan offers "One million freshly extracted Australian e-mail addresses - completely new, never been used before. Target these people. Purchase the CD online for only $US39. Just send us your charge card details."

Another, from Russia, was even darker. "Lolitas only from 8 to 14 years of age. Absolutely naked and amazing!" said the subject line. The message promised "Innocent angels. Naked, young and very charming girls in exclusive high quality pictures." There followed an internet address, presumably leading to a commercial paedophilia site.
It's all regulated potentially dangerous stuff. Delete it without opening it. Opening such messages will, at the very least, expose you to more of the stuff. When the mail comes with an "unsubscribe" button, neglected. If you try to remove your company name in the spammer's list you're simply letting them know that yours is a live address and you'll be opening you to ultimately an even bigger torrent of messages you wouldn't want.
At worst you could be downloading the herpes virus, such as the notorious Klez or LoveBug, able to crippling your computer or damaging your company's IT system and costing thousands of dollars in repair bills.
"On average, one in every 212 e-mails now contains a computer virus - that's one every three seconds on the Internet," said Nick Hawkins, general manager in Asia Pacific for MessageLabs, a British e-mail scanning and spam-cleaning service.

Pornography is among the biggest revenue earners on the Internet, and the operators of porn sites are among the biggest users of spam.

Popular free e-mail services have become susceptible to spammers who buy clever computer programs that generate an incredible number of random addresses and flood such popular sites as Hotmail, Excite and Yahoo.
