Here's the good news: In spite of the pull of tradition andsocial expectations, people are beginning to opt out of thetraditional aging process, refusing to slow down, fall intoline, give up, and drop out. Unfortunately, examples ofinspiring mature lives too often remain hidden. When brought tolight, we exclaim in astonishment, "Isn't she wonderful for herage," or "Isn't it amazing what he is still doing?" When peoplelearn I am still working as a pharmacist, they gasp, "You arestill working full-time at age 76?" Big deal! Chronological ageis an accounting of time gone by, not a measure of physical ormental capacity.
Bombarded [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] by countless predictions of impending disability anddeath, you start looking for signs [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] of your own decline. Amomentary memory lapse, which everyone experiences, regardlessof age, results in a panicky "I'm having a senior moment." Ihave never heard a teenager experiencing a memory lapse (andthey have plenty of them) berate him or herself with "I'm havinga junior moment."
You adopt attitudes and behaviors that instruct yoursubconscious to help you let go of life. You kid yourself thatyou are just taking time to smell the roses but before you knowit, the roses are on your coffin [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and you are pushing up daises.
You are deemed lazy or irresponsible if you have not prepared toacquire that contagious, debilitating disease called retirement- a political absurdity of the Depression Era thatshort-circuits the life and potential of many capable peopleand, burdens society in too many ways to count.
But for now, tradition and custom still dominate. You know theroutine: Around age 50 an accelerating number of sound bites, events and dire warnings about inescapable problems and pitfallsof aging are relentless reminders life is winding down.
In the past century, the American life span has increased 27years. Boomers are the first generation ever to have theopportunity for a healthy, productive Second Life. They canchoose the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] traditional aging route as their parents did, orforge an [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] exciting, unprecedented transition from fantasy-driven"young forever boomer" to real-life healthy, productive, agelessbloomer. It's a matter of choice, not chance. It's just thatsimple.
The American way of aging, steeped in stultifying tradition andflawed conventional wisdom of a bygone era, is slowly changing.
You drop something and immediately declare, "I must be gettingold." Young people drop things all the time and don't imaginethey are getting old. They just bend over and pick it up. Youthdoesn't sweat the small stuff - why should you?
Expression of amazement for age-related competence ispatronizing. Ability should be valued for what it is, withoutreference to chronological age. That point will be reached whenmore influential and outspoken mature role models come out ofthe "old age" closet and show, if not flaunt, what they andothers are capable of accomplishing. They need to help establishan enlightened society in which healthy, productive [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] aging is nolonger newsworthy as something special. It will open doors ofopportunity and possibilities now closed [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] to valuable andtalented people afflicted [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] with nothing more incapacitating thanadvanced chronological age.
Social and family pressure convinces you the home you've livedin all your life is now "too much" for you. So you move to aretirement community where you not only enjoy the comfort andcamaraderie of peers, but you are also vulnerable to the realityof the Grim Reaper who manifests himself in an abnormalconcentration of sickness, depression, and death.
The advent of age 60 can really accelerate the "old age"wrecking ball. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Tradition says it's time [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] to leave the real world. It's time to travel and play golf the rest of your life.
How about you: Are you living a life that [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] rejects the tyranny ofchronological age? Are you happily marching forward to the beatof your own personal drummer? Are you gloriously [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] "out of sync"with convention-bound peers? Are you productively defyingarchaic wisdom that no longer makes sense? If so, the worldneeds to know about you.
