A harvest of favor
Because the new Autumn/Winter 2001 collections are unveiled, Constance Harris says a feeding frenzy is underway. WELL,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], judging by the abundance of Moet, freshly-squeezed orange juice and cappuccino to be imbibed this week, I must be in the center of fashion week somewhere . although, it finding yourself in Dublin, it is a bit of a shock.
Now seems to be the unofficial start of Ireland's Autumn/Winter 2001 fashion merry-go-round. Already, I've been to shows for Awear,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Traffic and Kalu, met plenty of designers, seen loads of ranges and fashion pics and am getting practically knocked down by models dashing everywhere. And I've noticed the very best of the brand new collections are flying out the door quicker than they are able to get them out of their stock rooms. It truly is a feeding frenzy out there.
And next week which sees the shows of Macari-Brennan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], The look Centre, Danos, Penneys,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Vero Moda, Marks Spencers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Futura,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Taispe ntas et al it will be Ten times worse. Great!
Kalu is really a designer boutique in Naas, owned by Louise Flanagan and Kate O'Dwyer and all sorts of I can have to say is wow! Boy, did these women get their buying right.
If you've got money and also you like dressing just like a woman if you love texture, curvy shapes, trims, luxury,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], lacy vagaries, sequined heel shoes, big handbags, cashmere,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fur, boots,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], belts, something anything different, yet recognisable, then this shop is perfect for you. The funny thing is, up until three seasons ago, the Kalu look was much more comfortable. If you went to Kalu you were guaranteed a respectable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], stylish, safe image. But everything has changed. Owners Kate and Louise have changed plus they are taking their customers together into a new, rich and evocative present.
"I think we're much more confident now. We know what we should like and that we want that and that," Louise explained.
"We might carry a range only for one season just because it was right for that time and then there are others that are always right," adds Kate.
"We're travelling everywhere now Ny,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Spain, Italy we'll go anywhere we are able to to locate different things that people feel is us the shop,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Louise.
Labels that offer individuality are Jemima Khan, Ghost, Betsy Johnson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the lesser-known Aussie label Alannah Hill, Chine and Roberta Scarpa,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who they cannot stop enthusing. Jorando is really a Spanish range of slinky, sexy yet demur cocktail dresses cocktail dress was the old-fashioned term for these kinds of dresses, but that's an expression from a naff, unwanted part of the Twentieth century,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so I'll just refer to them as party numbers.
There are funky furs by Maxfield Parrish in chocolate, purple and cream plus they should open their own shoe shop as they have purchased so many. (Although the excellent Fabucci shoe shop, which stocks Armando Pollini, is just over the road from Kalu.) You will find Stephane Kelian classic wedge-heel suede knee-highs (the fashion editor's walking boot, when kitten heels prove too tiring),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], L'Autre Chose kitten heels and antiqued leather shoes (fab) and Luc Berjen boots (cool).
Excellent suiting is provided by Whistles, that has gone very Edwardian, and Spanish designer Isabel De Pedro, whom Kate described to me to be very chic.
"As a lady herself she's very sophisticated . she's like a latter-day Eva Peron and her collections are very clean, very sophisticated lots of black!"
Also at Kalu's show we had our first taste of Lainey's new Autumn collection. People who are Laineyholics are going to be in seventh heaven (or should that be Shaman) this could be her best collection yet.
Just how did Kate and Louise approach buying for Winter 2001,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
"Though we never actually spoke about this," Kate explained. "When i was buying, it was vintage looks that we really liked . but we wanted it to be modern a brand new, old-fashioned look if you know the reason.
"Like a big chunky belt something totally contemporary put into an old-fashioned, romantic look, funks a dress-up costume into being a modern look," Louise adds.
Speaking of which, as a total hip belt addict The truth is that I had a one-tracked brain about looking to get backstage to get my grubby paws on the antiqued leather-studded belts. If you too are belt junkies Kalu, Brown Thomas and Costume are the shops to go to for a means to fix this specific malaise.
"We prefer to mix different designers to get a look not slavishly carrying out a designer look," Kate explained. "So the look isn't static and our customers are not at all likely to see their outfit outside.
"And we change our look each season so our customer changes too."
Which is the best method to stay feeling, and looking, young and vibrant.
Kate and Louise are a great team. The affection, respect and enthusiasm they had for one another when they started the shop four years ago remains. Stronger even. They have lovers plus they support each other in that their kids take priority. They love what they do and revel in their customers.
Apparently their clients identify who they like to work with when purchasing a dress-up costume may it be Kate, Louise,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], their snappily-dressed twentysomething manageress, Emer, or Louise's mum, Ann Waters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who also works there.
"I think we've matured we have clothes, ranges for example Transit, that you need for doing the college run but it's all to do with knowing where we're going," says Louise. "We feel, this will be our shop take it as we are."
Love it or let it rest? Tough terms from the ladies who were so sweet. Kalu has come a long way,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. But I think their confidence is justified. And they are still sweeties.
