In Bonita Springs, a chapter of the national organization Shoes that Fit has been getting children into properly fitting clothes and shoes for five years now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with the help of volunteers like Vacca, 61. Bonita Springs retirees Pat and Tom Leggett started the local chapter of the organization in 2004.
"My former life was in education," said Pat Leggett. "And I heard about (Shoes that Fit) and thought this would be a good thing to do someday when we have more time."
On Monday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that labor of love came into full bloom as it does every year at this time. In the cafeteria at Bonita Springs Elementary School, the Leggetts and a small cadre of dedicated volunteers moved among tables stacked with navy blue and tan pants and shorts, neat polo shirts wrapped in plastic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], six-packs of underwear and socks and orderly piles of shoes.
Everything was organized by gender, then separated out by size. Volunteers went along the rows, one donated brown Target paper bag at a time. They stuffed each bag with clothing and shoes according to a chart attached that indicated the age and size for each child: one pair of pants, one pair of shorts, three polo shirts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one six-pack of underwear and of socks and one pair of athletic shoes.
"The boxes were piled high this morning," said Diana Cummings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], pointing to the thinning stacks of clothing just after lunch time. "It's just amazing in a few hours what we can get done. Now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it looks like we're going to get shipped out on time."
Bags are prepared according to lists provided by the five southernmost Lee County elementary schools. Bonita Springs, Spring Creek and Pinewoods elementary schools provided lists totaling more than 250 children to Shoes that Fit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Leggett is awaiting lists from Three Oaks Elementary School and Rayma C. Page Elementary School that will add another 150 children to the list.
Bonita Elementary School sent home forms for parents to fill out at the end of the school year in June, and even now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], some parents are returning to say their circumstances have changed. Where jobs once existed to fill mouths and buy shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there is now only unemployment checks in some households, and parents are realizing they must ask for help.
"At the time, they just threw (the form) away thinking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 'We don't need this,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],'" said school Secretary Lynda Van Bibber.
On the day when children get their new clothes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said Principal David Short, things in the school are "bright and cheery."
"What we have always found is whatever it is you do, you get as much out of it as the people on the other end," said Short.
Pat Leggett said that the cost of the pants,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], shorts, shirts and socks alone for 250 kids comes to about $10,000. A small price to pay, Leggett said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to help a child start the school year properly clothed and feeling like the rest of the kids around her.
