Motion Analysis
No matter how good - or how bad - you are at a particular sport,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there's always room for improvement. A couple of things that may help much are lots of practice and technology.
Biomechanics is the study of the way the body moves and the forces at work in the body. Scientists are using it to review movement in sports. By using this technology can make performance better, and also to understand and prevent injuries in athletes.
The new Adidas 1 shoe is among the most technologically advanced training shoes ever,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It features a microprocessor that's more powerful compared to first Apple Mac built in the arch from the sole.
The trainer can automatically adjust its cushioning to suit the top that you're running on,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the weather and even your weight. The calculations take just 25 milliseconds to do and also the shoe can even change setting in mid air.
This fancy footwear doesn't come cheap, but almost anything to help training be comfortable may be well worth the price.
Dr Ross Anderson, lecturer at the sports science department in the University of Limerick, shows SCOPE the way the study is performed, using 3D motion analysis:
The individual being studied has markers placed at various points on the body
Once the person moves,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cameras placed round the lab pick up the movement from the markers
This is done using infrared light,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so that all that the camera actually "sees" may be the markers
The cameras send the data to a computer
The pc shows a line-drawing from the movements (this drawing looks like a stick man)
Scientists may then analyse the movement
Dr Anderson says that this means we are able to measure movement scientifically. "If an athlete is getting injured in some manner,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], doing a certain movement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we are able to look and find out exactly what's going on and try and tweak that slightly to reduce the risk of injury," he says.
Due to the analysis, an athlete can be given a brand new training programme. Suggestions like telling the player to shoot using the elbow extended more, or using the knee flexed, may be enough to increase success. The scientists can then monitor the athlete after a few months to see how the training has worked or how the method has improved.
Another advantage from the system is that different athletes can be compared and contrasted to one another. "It makes things an awful lot easier,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Dr Anderson. "We were spending days,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], otherwise weeks, getting this type of data before with something such as this,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's instantaneous."
