Parents look for savings on back to school items
When Danbury resident shopped for school supplies recently, she realized she made over $5.
That's right, not only did she not spend any money, but she ended up earning $5.89 on her purchases.
After buying about half a dozen items in Staples including pencils,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], scotch tape, ballpoint pens, and folders--many of which were on sale for $1 or less--she spent a little over $30. She then used a $10 competitive coupon from , and when she got home, she mailed in three rebate redemption forms she received from Staples.
On another local shopping excursion, her purchases included 15-cent spiral notebooks, 20-cent glue sticks, and a $10 backpack.
"We only shop the sales," says Melendez, 36, a stay-at-home mother to Aaron, 8, Olivia, 6, and Evan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 4. "My kids know that if something is not on sale, we don't get it."
Camille says she and her husband Jeff, 35, who works as an elementary school principal, make it a point to set an example to their children to spend money wisely.
"Delay gratification is our motto. If the children say they want something, we tell them `You know what Grammy always says -- It's good to want things.' This is a saying Jeff's mom (Theresa) used to say to him when he was young. It means `You don't always get what you want,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],'" she says.
She adds that she puts the money she saves toward family vacations, going to the movies, and giving to her church.

"I'll probably return about half the clothes, and spend a total of $300 for both girls together.
