Recruit reverses trend,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
basketball players talk about playing overseas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they usually mean playing professionally after college. high schools for basketball seasoning. Lattin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a 6-8½ forward from Houston,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], went the other direction, playing last season at the Canarius Basketball Academy in Spain's Canary Islands.
"I come from a family of trail blazers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so I feel like I have big shoes to fill and I try to fill them as I go along."
His grandfather was David Lattin, a starting center for the 1966 Texas Western basketball team, the first all-black starting five to win an NCAA title. Lattin's mother is Monica Lamb,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a WNBA pioneer who won three titles with the Houston Comets from 1998-2000.
While Lattin is comfortable underneath on defense blocking shots and is listed as a power forward,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he weighs only 193 pounds and sees himself as a small forward.
"In my mind,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I'm a three,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I still have a little ways to actually play a three," Lattin said. "I go in and out a lot. Defensively, (being inside) is my bread and butter; that's what's got me to where I have to be. Offensively, I'm not strong enough to always bang, but I'm quicker than a lot of people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so I have to get them outside to attack."
His frustration in getting other coaches to see him as a small forward led to his going to Canarius,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where he could play a more European style of play that suits his game. His mother, who was in France when Khadeem was born,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was all for the idea. The Canary Islands, controlled by Spain,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], are off the Northwest coast of Africa.
"My mom had played overseas and she said it was a great opportunity for her,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Lattin said. "She said she felt like she grew but she was older when she went and that I would appreciate playing overseas even more because I'm young and it can help me develop character. So that's what we decided to do."
The 2014 recruit is back on this side of the Atlantic, attending various camps,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including the Nike Skills U camp in Alexandria,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Va.,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this week. When he's home in Houston, he works out with former NBA coach John Lucas. There's a possibility he could stay in-state for college,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as his list of schools includes Baylor,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Kansas, Texas, Texas A and Oklahoma.
He's not sure whether he'll return to Canarius or play in the USA this fall. He doesn't regret playing a season abroad, even if the lack of exposure to recruiting analysts meant he dropped in several rankings.
"I needed to get better ball-handling and no one would take us seriously here," Lattin said. "We had to go somewhere where they would really prepare me. There are some things you lose playing overseas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because it's not as fast over there - it's a different game. But you gain a lot of things playing there. It's definitely a win-win."
