Marlboros Strome unfazed
The 15-year-old hockey player netted five goals in one game using the routine at a tournament earlier this season, so he's sticking with the superstition.
"I can't explain it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said, laughing Tuesday before the Greater Toronto Hockey League's Top Prospects game at Herb Carnegie Arena in North York.
The game showcases the GTHL's top 40 players. This year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], former NHLer Nick Kypreos coached one team while former NHL general manager Doug MacLean coached the other.
Strome,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who plays for the Toronto Marlboros AAA minor midget team,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], knew plenty of scouts would be in the stands, but that didn't faze him.
"I'm not going to try and do anything outrageous," he said before the game, dressed in shorts, a stinky undershirt - another superstition - and sneakers. "I'm just going to play my game."
Strome, whose brother Ryan was drafted in the first round, fifth overall, to the New York Islanders in 2011,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has more than 150 points in just under 60 games this season.
He registered the majority of those points as assists in both tournament and league play,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. He's expected to be a top-five pick in the Ontario Hockey League draft in April.
He could easily play for his school team at Lorne Park Secondary School,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but chooses not to because he can't risk getting injured. The lanky six-foot-two forward from Mississauga is known as a playmaker but isn't afraid to throw his weight around.
During the opening shift Tuesday night, he hammered an opposing player to the ice and then plowed through another back at his own blue line.
He finished the game with one assist for Team Kypreos,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which beat Team MacLean 2-0.
Strome has led the Marlboros for seven years now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], claiming the GTHL championship the past five seasons, and the Ontario championship twice, in 2011 and 2009.
But he's modest, a quiet player who credits his teammates for much of his success.
"They know how to get open for me," he said before the game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], eager to hit the stairs and warm up. "Those guys help me out so much."
On the ice,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he looks like his favourite player Joe Thornton, powering through opposing players or stick-handling through them before setting up his teammates.
He isn't afraid to rumble in the corners,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or drive the puck to the net, and he's creating a stir amongst OHL scouts who know he'll only get better once his body matures.
Tim Cherry, son of Canadian icon Don Cherry and the OHL's scout for the GTHL,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said it took just one shift for him to know Strome is a special player.
"He's got the whole package," said Cherry. "He's explosive, one of the best skaters in the GTHL,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and he has the magic hands,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and an intensity you look for game in and game out."
