Minneapolis Fed's longtime research chief Rolnick to retire
Art Rolnick,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whose tenure at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis and ready public comments make him nearly symbolic of the institution,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is retiring in July after 40 years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the final 25 of which he spent creating a world-renowned research division in the regions of macroeconomics and monetary and fiscal policy.
"You don't replace someone like Art; rather,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you develop the building blocks he's established over his years of dedicated service," Narayana Kocherlakota, president of the Minneapolis Fed, said Tuesday in a prepared statement.
Rolnick, reached on vacation Tuesday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said he's likely to concentrate on his advocacy for early childhood education. He's awaiting approval to carry on in his position as co-director of an entity he founded in the University of Minnesota,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Humphrey Institute's Human Capital Research Collaborative.
Rolnick, 65, of Plymouth, is definitely an outspoken critic of competitive state shelling out for economic development projects like sports stadiums or tax breaks to lure manufacturers. But he became a passionate advocate for early childhood education in the past when he and a colleague did a cost-benefit analysis, concluding that dollars spent educating young children pays large dividends over time.
The Minneapolis Fed has chosen as its a new study director Kei-Mu Yi, a macroeconomics researcher with expertise in international trade, economic development and growth. Rolnick will retire July 31, and Yi starts Aug. 16.
Yi is vice president and head of monetary and macroeconomic research in the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, where he has worked since 2004. He previously spent seven years working in the international research unit in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Degrees from MIT, Chicago
Yi did both in the non-public sector and in academia. A native of Boston, he obtained his bachelor's degree in economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology before earning a doctorate in economics in the University of Chicago in 1990. Yi became an associate at work professor of economics at Rice University before joining the Fed. And that he has taught at the Wharton School from the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, Ny University, and also the universities of Virginia and Iowa.
"We are extremely lucky to have an economist of Kei-Mu's stature and experience to guide our research efforts," Kocherlakota said. "His academic credentials,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], coupled with his prior leadership in the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], lead him to an excellent candidate to direct research efforts at our bank."
Yi couldn't be reached Tuesday for comment.
He and Kocherlakota were colleagues in the University of Chicago and also have an excellent relationship, Rolnick said. He explained Yi is a "distinguished and talented academic" who did a good job managing research in Philadelphia. He's also written some research papers with a few members in the Minneapolis Fed and should fit in well here, Rolnick added. "I think he plans to continue sort of the strong academic approach that we've absorbed the years to public policy."
Areas of expertise
Yi is considered a specialist in international trade and development. Chari, an economics professor in the University of Minnesota and adviser towards the Minneapolis Fed. "He's a solid guy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an excellent guy. But of course, he's very, very big shoes to fill. I'm sure he understands the challenge that confronts him because Art Rolnick did such a phenomenal job over the years in building this right into a phenomenal research department."
Under Rolnick, Chari said, the Minneapolis Fed gained a reputation that would rank it among the top 10 academic institutions within the nation for the quality of its research. He did this allowing ideas bubble up in the bottom and letting his staff influence hiring along with other important decisions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which attracted top talent.
