Success Stories,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
I had basically been a size 8 my entire life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but when I was 35, I started eating compulsively. What did I eat? Name it. I liked salty, crunchy things nuts and chips and things like that although I wouldn't say no to a piece of chocolate. I gained 10 pounds a year for five years. It was devastating. I'd always loved clothes, but I started to hate shopping. I felt like the salespeople were looking down on me. I became withdrawn and cranky. I stopped exercising. I didn't have a social life. Finally, when I'd just turned 40 and was about to go from a size 12 to a 14,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I realized it was time to do something: I refused to be this chubby,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], middle-aged, invisible person.
Facing the Scale
I decided to try Weight Watchers, but I was very nervous. I didn't even know what I weighed at that point,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and I didn't want to know. But there was a Meeting right near my office, so I went and weighed in that first day. It was depressing. But the Leader was really nice,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so I decided to stay and see how it went.
My Leader and the other people in my Meeting have been essential. They offer great substitutions for foods I used to eat, as well as words of wisdom. For example, somebody said something recently in a Meeting that struck a chord with me: There's a difference between a binge and a splurge. A binge is when you're completely out of control; a splurge is when you plan to indulge yourself with a great meal or a candy bar, and save some POINTS® values for it. There's nothing wrong with a splurge now and then.
Exercising Again
Before I gained weight,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I'd always walked a lot and done crunches, hand weights and leg lifts. About a month after I joined Weight Watchers, I started exercising again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], taking it easy at first. I'll walk one day and do toning exercises the next, and I gradually increased the distance and number of repetitions. Now I work out for about 45 minutes, five or six days a week.
When it's too cold to walk outside, I'll use Tae Bo tapes. I wouldn't call Tae Bo fun the first time I tried it, I thought, "I'm in pain!" but it's very high-energy, and it exercises every single part of your body in a short amount of time.
Not Everyone Offers Encouragement
Before I started losing weight, I had been wallpaper, but suddenly people were starting to notice me.
At first, a lot of people at work were telling me how great I looked,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the more weight I lost, the more people started giving me a hard time about it, telling me, "You're getting too skinny." But I knew my weight was within a healthy range. One guy even told me I looked better when I was 15 pounds heavier.
Pursuing a New Love: Fashion
When I started losing weight, I started shopping again. I'd always loved clothes, but I began getting interested in the whole subject the different designers, how to predict trends. I started thinking, I'm spending all this time learning about fashion I should put it to some constructive use. Why not make a change?
Now I'm taking courses in fashion merchandising management. I never would have had the nerve to do it before Weight Watchers. Now I know I can do anything.
Before: I used to eat salty stuff all day long. I could eat a whole can of cashews in one sitting.
After: I'll eat vegetables or baked tortilla chips with salsa, or carrots and celery sticks with hummus.
Before: I'd pig out on sweets after dinner.
After: I make it a point to always have some kind of fruit that I really like at home right now I'm into fresh pineapple to satisfy those cravings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Before: I didn't feel attractive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I didn't see why anybody would want to go out with me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
After: I have a great boyfriend!
Before: The only thing I could stand to shop for was shoes, but if you don't have nice clothes to go with them, buying shoes isn't fun either.
After: I'm a shopaholic again, and I can even shop sample sales!
Before: I never cooked.
After: I have a collection of Weight Watchers cookbooks, and I cook all the time.
Before: My self-consciousness kept me from going after what I wanted in life.
After: Knowing that I had the discipline and control to lose weight gave me the confidence to change other aspects in my life too.
CLOTHING CREDITS: TOP, GUESS JEANS; SKIRT, OLSEN; SHOES,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], CARLOS SANTANA; EARRINGS,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], SEVENTH SENSE; BRACELETS,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ALDINA
Once Ellen learned that reaching for unhealthy snacks was keeping her from the things she loved, she kicked her bad habit and made some healthy changes. Read to find out which healthy snack foods can curb your cravings and keep you on the weight-loss straight and narrow.
