although not uniformly fair
Visit Asda and you will kit your son or daughter from head to toe for under with a 75p polo shirt, shoes and underwear. Woolworths does shirts for and even the more traditionally expensive brands have ultra-cheap options. The event agency interviewed workers at seven factories in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh where women were sewing uniforms for high-street retailers. Many workers complained of poor conditions and low pay,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], saying they could not afford to send their own children to college.
The pile-'em-high, sell-'em-cheap ethos from the high street has provoked a backlash among buyers of adult fashion; the desire for quality, not quantity,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], along with a growing understanding of the possible ethical implications of cut-price fashion, is turning many away - including parents, as Mark and Carry Rogers, founders of Clean Slate uniforms, have found.
The Rogers founded the company after scouring the nation for cotton school uniforms that weren't chemically treated because their 10-year-old daughter experienced severe eczema. After a long hunt, Carry had the thought of creating a company that sourced environmentally and ethically sound uniforms.
Already the founder and who owns Pachacuti,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a 14-year-old fair-trade clothing business, she'd little trouble turning the schoolwear into reality and they were ready to begin selling in August this past year.
However their "clean-conscience uniforms" don't come cheap: trousers cost for example, and shirts
Free of Teflon and other alike stain-resistant compounds that may irritate your skin and exacerbate eczema, the clothes happen to be approved by the Fair Trade Labelling Organisation, which independently guarantees that fair-trade codes of practice happen to be met at every stage of production (meaning working conditions, pay and hours all will be reasonable).
Obviously,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], many parents can't afford Clean Slate's prices. M S, for instance, sells school fleeces, trousers and skirts produced from recycled plastic bottles that would otherwise visit landfill,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and shirts made with fair-trade cotton; five per cent of every uniform item sold would go to Save the Children to assist educate Ugandan children. A number of M S's mainstream uniforms come in Sri Lanka, where conditions are believed to better than in certain other countries.
Another leading retailer was censured by a report within this month's Ethical Consumer magazine for not including country of origin on schoolwear labels,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], despite acknowledging within their corporate social responsibility report that shoppers want to know where and how goods are made and pledging their commitment to getting the best prices from all around the globe, although not whatever it takes.
When it had been pushed for answers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the business's spokesman said its schoolwear came from a variety of sources, including eastern Europe, Bangladesh and China.
"China is on our listing of oppressive regimes," says Ruth Rosselson, the editor. The magazine awarded John Lewis 5/20 in the School Uniform Buyer's Guide. Both Asda and Tesco scored 0.5.
They rate companies according to principles organized by their umbrella organisation, the Ethical Consumer Research Association, which requires analysis of research compiled across five major categories, considering issues for example sustainability and animal welfare to pollution, toxic chemicals, human and worker's rights and offer chain policy.
The whole market is at fault,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to Dominic Eagleton of Action Aid. "We wouldn't publish this report if it wasn't representative of the entire industry," he says. "It took lots of detective work to discover factories specifically producing school uniforms."
He compares poor people pay and conditions to practices common throughout the third world.
"Because we can not provide the names from the factories where we conducted our interviews, it boils down to our word against the retailers," he admits that. He adds: "But we're a respected agency and that we represent the people behind these clothes."
Last week, retailers hit back against Action Aid's report, saying its claims were unsubstantiated and asking for further details so they might be investigated. They also said they took their ethical responsibilities seriously.
Just like parents. The Rogers believe the tide is turning. "We're run off our feet," says Carry.
"We get inquiries from a wide variety of kinds of people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], from posh mothers in Kensington and parents in Croydon to villagers in Cornwall. Plus,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we've had lots of feedback the clothes last longer and bobble and fray less. We're delighted."
