Marathon boost to economy Gold Coast Events
MILLIONS of dollars have been poured into the Gold Coast economy over the Gold Coast Airport Marathon weekend and tourism boss Martin Winter says it couldn have come at a better time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The chief executive officer of Gold Coast Tourism said world-class events such as the marathon were just what the Coast needed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], more so this year than any other.
Mr Winter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who competed in the half-marathon himself in under two hours,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said many of the interstate and overseas competitors were likely to stay on the Gold Coast for at least four or five days to recover.

The overall entry increased by 11 per cent -- an extra 2386.
Interstate entries made up 5578 and 1948 flew in from overseas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"This event is very valuable in revenue and to jobs. It generated many millions of dollars just over the weekend, people are going out for dinner,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], buying new shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], catching a taxi, it all adds up," he said.
Mr Winter said the event was able to reach the living rooms of people all around the world which was invaluable to the Gold Coast,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"The event located where it is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], profiles the destination in a unique and magnificent manner and today to be blessed with the best weather possible helped too," he said.
"This sort of promotion doesn happen by chance, they require commitment from every stakeholder in the city,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
He said huge numbers came to participate from interstate and overseas which helped enormously in keeping low cost air carriers flying to our destination.
"When the planes are full on the weekends like this,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it sends a great message to the airlines who are also struggling to keep numbers up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
International media coverage included a Japanese film crew who were making a documentary on the event to be seen by millions of Japanese people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Mr Winter said big events were critical to the future of the Gold Coast,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
He said Gold Coast Tourism was focusing on how they could attract more large events to the Coast, especially in the quiet times.
This year there were the most countries every represented in the event with people flying in from more than 39 destinations around the world,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Swine flu fears meant at least 600 Japanese runners who had planned to travel to the Gold Coast cancelled their trips,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Queensland Events Gold Coast chairman Kerry Watson said they were still able to attract 1200 Japanese.
Mr Watson said Japan would continue to be the main market for the marathon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], along with expanding participation from China, Hong Kong,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Singapore and Malaysia.
"What we are seeing is a rise in income throughout South East Asia and the strong air access to the Gold Coast through the airport makes it a huge market that will continue to grow,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
