even with a predictable ending,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Galaxy 3 (June 30). Some 50,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 fans crowded into Stanford Stadium to see MLS' California rivalry renewed. Years from now, several times that many will claim to have been there.
Steven Lenhart opened the scoring in the seventh minute,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the teams traded body blows from there. to a 3-1 lead before the hosts rebounded. By the time Wondolowski tallied the 61st-minute winner with a deft shot off his heel, the game already was an all-time classic. Beckham then cemented it with a theatrical stoppage-time meltdown that included kicking a ball toward a fallen player and a brief run-in with the Earthquakes mascot.
As entertaining as it all was, the match becomes even bigger in hindsight. (MLS Cup) would go on to win the league's two major prizes, Wondolowski would tie the single-season goal scoring record and a dormant rivalry caught fire again on an unforgettable evening by the Bay.
Steve Zakuani and Brian Mullan make amends. If there was a Nobel Prize for sportsmanship,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this star-crossed pair would be the frontrunner. In April 2011, Mullan-a five-time MLS Cup champion-shattered Zakuani's right leg with a reckless tackle. Fourteen months later, Zakuani returned to the field, fittingly against Mullan's Rapids. The Seattle Sounders forward played only four minutes and hardly touched the ball,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but he made his mark on the game, and the season, following the whistle when he embraced Mullan at midfield. The players then swapped jerseys-soccer's sign of mutual respect.
"I had forgiven him a long time ago. There were no problems, but I think that was good to have that public moment for closure," Zakuani told NBC. United 1, New York Red Bulls 0 (Nov. Cool. Galaxy in San Jose. Galaxy squad hitting its stride at just the right time exacted revenge for its game-of-the-year setback and ended San Jose's season. Those 21 minutes on Nov. 7 at Buck Shaw Stadium represented everything the rest of the league had feared all season-Donovan and Robbie Keane marauding through a helpless opponent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], creating and finishing scoring chances at will. The Earthquakes took a 1-0 aggregate lead into the second leg of their MLS Cup quarterfinal series but were helpless as Keane scored twice and Mike Magee added a third (Donovan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], at his energetic best, set up two) before halftime. San Jose never recovered, and the Galaxy were on their way to a second consecutive championship.
The Goonies. San Jose needed this. With just one playoff appearance since rejoining the league in '08 and with ground for the club's new stadium still not broken, the Earthquakes revitalized soccer in the Bay Area with a remarkable campaign that featured about a decade's worth of entertainment. Goals flowed by the dozens (San Jose scored more than any MLS team in 14 years), Wondolowski was in peak form and the "Goonies never say die" spirit embodied by the likes of Alan Gordon and Lenhart resulted in an unbelievable litany of late-game heroics. The 'Quakes scored 10 goals in second-half stoppage time during a season that was more fun that just about any other in MLS history. They secured both the Supporters Shield and soccer's future in San Jose.
CONCACAF Champions League frustration. With Beckham back,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the CONCACAF Champions League crown appeared to be there for the taking for the Galaxy and MLS. surely did, on paper. The January knee injury to Omar Gonzalez and the club's MLS Cup hangover robbed the league of its best shot at a continental title in a dozen years. The CCL continues to be the primary hurdle between MLS and the next level of respectability.
Cal FC. Open Cup than any pro team has managed in 99 years. Cal FC,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the collection of castoffs managed by former Hall of Fame forward and professional critic Eric Wynalda, electrified American soccer with three consecutive Open Cup upsets, culminating in a 1-0 overtime triumph over the Portland Timbers.
The Hollywood story ended in the round-of-16,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where Cal lost 5-0 to the Seattle Sounders. But Wynalda and his unheralded players long will be remembered for representing everything that's great about cup competitions.
Peter Nowak. Nowak's abrupt dismantling of the Philadelphia Union's 2011 playoff team, highlighted by the bitter departure of leading scorer Sébastien Le Toux, allegedly was the tip of the iceberg at PPL Park.
Accusations that Nowak forced injured players to train, that he was "orally berating and physically intimidating fellow employees" and that he might even have improperly profited from player transactions emerged after he filed a lawsuit contesting his June dismissal.
The truth still hasn't been revealed, but where there's smoke, there's probably enough to ensure that Nowak never will coach again in MLS.
John Terry. NBC's first season of American soccer coverage featured the quality announcing stylings of Arlo White and Kyle Martino (ESPN's Taylor Twellman is another rising star) and a concerted promotional commitment that featured MLS 36,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a "day-in-the-life" documentary that followed individual players (and their wives and girlfriends). The show's debut focused on Wondolowski, whose work during July's MLS All-Star Game prompted this from Chelsea captain John Terry: "Your movement is incredible. It's like a nightmare for me."
That comment, from a player who's competed at the highest level for years and faced down the sport's very best, was about as satisfying as two seconds could be for MLS supporters who think the quality of their own league is worthy of respect.
Beginning with the 16,000-square-feet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],500-pound banner hoisted just before kickoff featuring tributes to Portland's soccer past, the Timbers Army unleashed a torrent of sound, color and smoke rivaling anything mustered in Buenos Aires, Barcelona or Istanbul.
Their commitment to honoring (or creating) their own traditions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], songs and symbols rather than imitating others' was welcome,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as was the interplay between the locals and the hundreds of traveling Seattle supporters which produced a genuine derby feel. The energy elevated the setting to the stuff of American soccer fantasy. But it was real, in Oregon, in 2012, and it set a standard for fans around the rest of the league to shoot for in 2013.
