Newtown teacher receives national award for international volunteering
Eleven years later, King, now 51, teaches fifth-graders at , and has participated in volunteer projects all over the globe. She was recognized earlier this month by the as the recipient of an "Everyday Heroes" award.

King said she grew up volunteering. In 2004, she incorporated volunteering into her teaching.
She learned of a school in Kosovo that burned down, and decided to start a pencil drive with her students to collect 10,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 pencils for students there, she said. King had her students write letters to businesses telling them about the drive, which her class titled "Pencils for Peace."
"People were really supportive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said. "It was huge."
After her class shipped the pencils,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Newtown Rotary club gave King money to visit Kosovo, she said.
About a year later, she did a similar project, called "A Mile in Their Shoes," for which she and her students raised money and collected shoes for people in Haiti.
King has also worked as a volunteer for Unite for Sight,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a local organization that sends volunteers throughout the world to help others with eye health,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and she has led her students to raise money for Liberian refugees in Ghana, she said.
She spearheaded a project at Reed Intermediate School where more than 300 students became pen pals with the Liberian students living in Ghana,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"They all felt like they were friends,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," King said.
King's projects with the students incorporate math,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], social studies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], character education and writing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Epple said.
"It totally goes above and beyond," Epple said. "The kids just eat it up."
, another teacher at Reed Intermediate School and friend of King, said she was reading a magazine published by the American Federation of Teachers, and saw an advertisement seeking nominations for "Everyday Heroes" awards for teachers who inspire others and reach out to their communities.
"I immediately thought of Karen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Beaudry said. "She's just that person."
Beaudry nominated King. When King received an e-mail from the AFT saying she had been nominated for the award,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she didn't believe, she said.

The teacher's union announced that King won in the teacher's division earlier this month, said , AFT's assistant director of communications.
