A sane mental health product is not,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
We don't know why James Holmes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the 24-year-old suspect,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], shot up a film theater in Aurora, Colo. We don't know his mental state. Given the legal presumption of innocence, we shouldn't write with certainty it was him.
Given the way the 24-hour news cycle has expanded the American media's passion for speculation, however, the Batman Bloodbath became fodder for political policy prescriptions the moment the first round left the chamber of an AR-15 that night.
We saw it after Columbine,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when conservatives , game titles and also the so-called "trenchcoat mafia." Liberals (me included) set their sights on bullying jocks. The political debate ultimately prompted schools to adopt increased security measures and zero tolerance policies against bullying. State legislatures passed minor gun control laws.
These all may have been plans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Yet didn't prevent happening again.
The gun control debate took center stage after student Seung-Hui Cho, shot 32 people to death at Virginia Tech in 2007. Liberals said people with a history of mental medical issues to buy guns. Arguing that Cho's victims could have been able to defend themselves had they been packing, right-wingers students to transport weapons onto campuses.
Some commentators wondered aloud if the Usa should make it easier for those who have mental health issues to find and acquire help. But that type of discussion was quickly drowned out by the gun control debate.
The pattern is repeating itself. We all know what happened, but we do not know why.
We know that high-powered automatic weaponry was involved. The majority of us assume that Holmes, though purportedly intelligent and educated, was deranged. Why else would anyone slaughter innocent strangers inside a movie theater?
Given these assumptions, which may turn out be wrong Fort Hood shooter, thought by some to be struggling with
Setting aside the caveat that people still don't know why it happened,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the large guns, crazy, young white guy dynamic leads to two obvious policy prescriptions: gun control and improving access to mental health care. Post-Aurora, we're visiting a lot of the first kind, including requires numerical limits on ammo sales relatively few of the latter.
David Brooks, a conservative columnist at The New York Times, is definitely an interesting exception. "These killers are primarily the product of psychological derangements, not sociological ones," Brooks writes. But even he won't require a national war on mental illness: "The best way to avoid killing sprees is with relationships one individual notices that the relative or neighbor is going off the rails and gets that individual treatment before the barbarism takes control. But there also has to become a more aggressive system of treatments, specifically for men in their 20s."
Unfortunately, not everyone includes a relative or perhaps a concerned neighbor. With no real resolve for treating,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and therefore de-stigmatizing mental illness other words, providing free, simple, and easy access to mental health care professionals for everybody empty words.
A 2008 study found that 6% of Americans are afflicted by serious mental illnesses, which led to an estimated economic lack of $200 billion annually in lost earnings. (This doesn't include the one-quarter of the population who have less serious, diagnosable conditions.)
60 % of individuals with mental illness seek no treatment whatsoever. It's easy to understand why: Americans with limited funds must get by with a lame hodgepodge of options when they feel themselves going off the rails: suicide prevention hotlines, support groups, and absurdly low allocations of shrink visits under group insurance coverage.
Along with vision and dental care, mental health is definitely an ugly stepsister of America's frayed healthcare infrastructure, thought to be a supplemental luxury, and funded accordingly. If Obama health care reform law isn't overturned by a Romney administration, it can help make "mental health parity" insurers to deal with mental illness at the same priority level as medical conditions practical reality. But, failing a public option what we should really need, fully socialized medicine overall plan doesn't go nearly far enough.
Gun control talk is affordable. A national mental healthcare system that actually works would be expensive. Would each one avoid the next shooting spree? Maybe. Maybe not,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. He's the winner of several awards and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. His new book is The Book of Obama: How We Got From Hope and alter towards the Age of Revolt,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Dudley Brown is the executive director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, which advocates for firearms owners rights. This is exactly what he had to express: different than other cultures. We DO allow Americans to own the accoutrements that our military generally has. "Accoutrements." Such a pleasant method of describing the weapons and ammunition and the body armor that James Holmes had accumulated over a period of a few months.
Doesn ANYONE find this just a bit disturbing?
Somebody that wants to own a handgun for that protection of his family and property, and/or a rifle to visit hunting with, who's also prepared to undergo criminal background checks and reasonable registration requirements? THAT things i would call a responsible gun owner.
But to claim that the Second Amendment guarantees that anyone can come with an arsenal, stocked with as many guns because he wants, regardless of the sort of gun and ammunition that he wants, just because it his HOBBY? That simply nuts.
All can say is, if this sounds like the way in which it will likely be, only then do we should simply dispense using the hand-wringing once the next massacre takes place. James Holmes did not have a criminal history before he opened fire on the crowded theater. He went about accumulating his weapons and "accoutrements" the same way gun hobbyists everywhere do. We might as well get accustomed to it, because no one has got the guts to stand as much as the NRA.
The issue with mental health treatment is that lots of won't voluntarily accept it because they don't believe they're ill. They need to be involuntarily hospitalized which could only be done if one is actively psychotic, suicidal (a danger to self varieties). At that time it's too late. Mentally ill wind up homeless or dead. It may sound like this shooter didn't have a good reputation for mental illness. It's very hard to predict a first incident. Stricter gun laws would help trigger concerns about those who buy many weapons/ammunition. It is not one or the other--we need better mental health treatment, including substance abuse treatment, and gun control. But the bigist hurdle is incentivizing individuals to treatment.
