Anyi Lu's Cinderella tale,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
There was never any question in Anyi Lu's mind about what she wanted to be when she grew up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"I always knew I would have my own shoe company,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," the California-based designer laughed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], on a visit to Toronto this fall. "I am 5-foot-7 and I wear a size 3 shoe. It's genetic. My father wears a woman's 7."
Or she would be lied to and told she was size 5,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the smallest most stores carried. "They would stuff the shoe with padding and tissue. I was always tripping and falling. My mother thought I was blind."
Eventually,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Taiwan-born Lu left her career as a chemical engineer for Fortune 500 companies such as DuPont and Chevron. She went back to art school,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and then worked for orthopedic surgeon Taryn Rose (see story,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], right).
Then 4 1/2 years ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Lu's sister was getting married.
"She called me the day before the wedding,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Lu recalls. "She had bought a pair of $800 designer shoes with 120 mm heels,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but she said she could only wear them for 15 minutes - the length of the ceremony. She needed something else for the rest of the day."
Lu,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who was a competitive international Latin ballroom dancer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bought her sister a pair of white satin T-strap dance shoes. "She danced all night and I thought,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bingo. That's my business idea. Shoes that are on trend,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but not trendy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with the fit of a dance shoe."
For fall there are blood red "croc" pumps,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], leopard-spotted Mary Janes and elegant spectator shoes that tie with a satin bow. Poron urethane foam cushioning and flexible sacchetto construction make Lu's shoes as comfortable as slippers. And she incorporates three features of the classic dancer's shoe.
"There is always a really good toe box with enough room to wiggle so you have balance. There's arch support to hold the centre of your weight,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so you won't wobble. And there's a good base with enough surface area. A little nail-like heel won't cut it."
Lu has a patent pending for a spring design that circles the top of the foot with elastic."It's like putting a heel on a good secure sock,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she explains. "And a sock fits everyone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whether you are narrow or wide."
