Archie Panjabi discusses the mystery of Kalinda's sexuality
Even on the show filled with richly drawn characters, Archie Panjabi manages to stick out. The British actress plays Kalinda, the street-smart in-house investigator at Stern, Lockhart Gardner. Kalinda, who's keen on stiletto boots and snug leather jackets, isn't afraid to obtain a little Machiavellian if it means winning an instance; she's the perfect foil towards the buttoned-up Alicia (Julianna Margulies). I caught up with Panjabi to speak about the joys of playing this type of fearless character, Kalinda's ambiguous sexuality and, obviously, these shoes.
Kalinda gets to do everything that Alicia won't do. Were you excited to experience somebody that pushes the limits the way in which Kalinda does?
After i got the script, the breakdown would be a "Bollywood Erin Brockovich private eye." With film you get a more complete breakdown,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but with television you simply obtain a few adjectives, so she wasn't that clearly set. It's very organic and exciting this way. There was no magical list of character notes on her behalf, it's something that has emerge from every episode. We simply have no idea where she is going to go and what she is going to do from week to week. It is interesting to experience; she's so complex and she's always analyzing everything. I do not think I am as smart or as intelligent as her! I believe she has about four or five sets of eyes.
Kalinda and Alicia seem to be warming to one another. They're not exactly BFFs, but they possess a bond.
Kalinda's definitely gone through some hardship, and that's why I think she connects with Alicia. There's an unspoken connection. I think they're both strong women, plus they both respect one another incredibly for his or her intelligence as well as their sincerity. Kalinda is definitely more outspoken, but Alicia respects her honesty, and Kalinda feels protective of Alicia. She's not the type to put her arm around Alicia and provide her a tissue, she's more prone to say, "Do you need me to speak with Amber?" That is what makes her interesting: She takes action. since someone named "Donna" answered Kalinda's phone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there's
been a lot of speculation about her sexuality. Are you able to shed some light
about this mystery for us,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
I'm not 100% certain what's going to
happen with her sexuality. This really is one of those areas that Kalinda
hasn't confessed in my experience yet. However when she does, Let me tell you! This is
one of those big questions that will be addressed in January. But I
will tell you I do not think you are able to put Kalinda in a box. She's hard
to pigeonhole in each and every respect of life. It's very ,very difficult to
play her, and I feel quite privileged. It's tough to get a good role on
a great show. They're rare gems.
As tough as she's, Kalinda doesn't share much about herself -- with Alicia or anyone else. Could it be hard to play someone who is so bold but also so guarded?
It is a challenge. You cannot even read what's on her behalf mind so people often interpret her in different ways. There is a scene within the pilot where she unbuttons her blouse,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and some people think it is an inexpensive shot. Other people thought it was street-smart: "Oh, she knows the way the world works." The fantastic thing about "The Good Wife" is you really have to watch the show, you cannot get up and make some tea and are available back. I'll watch it and find out stuff that I didn't see on the page,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the industry thrilling feeling. It always eventually ends up being something quite different from the page. I have been on the show for months now, and the excitement hasn't worn out.
You must have done plenty of film work, but "The Good Wife" is the first recurring television role. What's it like to result in the change to being a regular on the series?
I had been just a little unsure at the outset. When you do a job like this, it's nine months straight,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with various directors. I'd never done something of that nature, to ensure that was initially just a little daunting. In film, you build the smoothness with the director over a period of weeks. You possess an concept of where that character is going immediately. And it's a shock whenever a new director is available in every eight days. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you get confident with the smoothness, and the other directors respect that; they have an idea of your character and who she's. You may still find a lot of a few things i havenrrrt heard of Kalinda, and it is quite exciting. I am always on my small feet and try to a little nervous, which I think is a good thing. It's always safer to be a little paranoid, my mom always said.
Kalinda is quite the clotheshorse. Don't your feet get sore in all those boots?
They're actually the best boots. They're probably the most comfortable footwear I've ever had on set. They're mixing it up with a few shoe boots now, because everyone is thinking about what Kalinda's wearing. For me, personally, wearing a pair of boots helps me get into character, and I possess a certain walk when I put them on. I like there to become a purpose on her boots rather than only a fashion statement. When women play investigators, they often wear trousers, however when you browse around now, you see a lot of attractive, intelligent women who are comfy wearing skirts. Kalinda is like that. She's feminine but quite tough and boisterous. She spends time at with cops and likes guns and leather. And that's fun to put on. Dan [Lawson] the costumer produces things every week and I am like, "Oh God, it will never fit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," but he is doing some magic tricks also it ends up fitting just like a glove.
Between "The Good Wife" as well as your film work, such as "The Constant Gardener" and "A Mighty Heart," you seem to possess a knack for selecting smart, timely material. Is that something you always search for, or is it just luck?
I'd love to say I made the smart decision of picking projects that became hits, but with "The Good Wife,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," I just read the script then one inside me said, "I love this, I want to do that." "East Is East" was my first film. That wasn't a smart move; that was just my first offer, and of course I took it. It was a very amaze when it became popular. I can become bored on set whether it's something that doesn't excite me or whether it's a personality that's not likely to keep me engaged. It's difficult to pick what is going to be a a guessing game. … Luck plays this type of big part. But getting lucky does cause you to more nervous for the next choice -- for every good egg, there's a bad egg nearby!
One of the things the show achieves this well is portray the difficulties faced by women at work, particularly office politics. Being an actress, is it tough to relate?
I do not think I've faced it to the degree that Alicia has. The great thing about my job is that you simply work with people for 2 to 3 months, as well as if you dislike somebody, you get to move on quickly. It's such a demanding job, I find it is hard to have office politics. Anything you film continues record for life. This is exactly why we take a lot care using the dress and anything else; that's why it is so important to create positive energy on set. We have such a responsibility to become there with our lines. . And I am lucky to utilize the people I actually do. [Series creators] Robert and Michelle King are so accessible and down to earth. It's very collaborative, and i believe that's one of the reasons why the show has been doing so well. I have a lot of fun on set using the actors, giggling and playing pranks on each other, to ensure that makes work really fun.
The show is filmed in New York, despite the fact that it's set in Chicago. Have you been enjoying life as a New Yorker?
I was just a little nervous at first. It was a brand new medium -- American television -- along with a new city. But visiting Ny is like a big hug, most people are so welcoming. There will be something about here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], everyone enables you to feel so in your own home. I miss my loved ones of course, however i don't miss London much. I was worried, but I feel really at home. Everyone says that who comes here from London, however i didn't believe them. Even my work day is fun. And we'll find out more about all of them, along with Alicia. You'll be seeing and hearing a lot more about all of the characters. Hopefully, that will give it an extended life making it more interesting of computer already is.
