My New Red Shoes founder Heather Hopkins organizes piles of donated,http://rogervivieroutlet.webmium.com/.
As founder and director of My New Red Shoes, , a 30-year-old Princeton University graduate,Parajumpers Jakker Long Bear Salg, provides new school clothes to homeless children and children of low-income families in the Bay Area.
Hopkins, who was born in New Hampshire and raised in Singapore, where her father worked for AT came up with the idea to start the nonprofit organization after the birth of her daughter, Annie, three years ago. Hopkins' mother also inspired her by sharing her memories of growing up poor in a small town in New Hampshire.
"When my daughter was a little over a year old, my mom came for a visit," Hopkins said. "She started talking about . when she was young. The summers are kind of a carefree time, but for her, there was an element of stress involved because she was never really sure if she was going to be prepared to go back to school in terms of having school supplies and something she'd be proud of wearing. For many years,Moncler Jassen Goedkope Koop, the Clothing Man, as he was called, would come by with his truck. He was a peddler. The day before the first day of school, her mom would manage to buy her something. Obviously, it pained her to tell the story."
After hearing about her mother's experience, Hopkins decided to get some of her friends together and help some children who needed clothing for school. "Over the course of about four months, roger vivier Shoes australia, I went out in the community and talked to everyone I knew and drummed up support for what I was doing," Hopkins said. "It was March 15,Moncler Jacken Deutschland, 2006, the day I decided to do this. I went out and gathered a board of directors. By August, we had dressed 354 kids for school. Our next back-to-school season was in August, and we clothed 600 kids,デュベティカアウトレット, and next year,デュベティカ 店舗, we're going for 1,Woolrich Arctic Jacket Shop,500."
She named the organization My New Red Shoes,http://monclerjacketsdeutschland.albirank.net/, only to learn later that her mother dressed her in red shoes on her first day of kindergarten.
In doing research for My New Red Shoes, Hopkins found studies that linked children's personal appearance with self-esteem and performance in school.
"Kids really do better when they feel better about the way they look," she said. "If you're going into the classroom and you just don't want anyone to look at you because you've got holes in your shirt or because you're wearing the same shirt that you've worn for the past five days, duvetica down jackets men sale, it really influences how much you can focus on your schoolwork, and how much you want to go out on the playground later on and interact with other kids. Even though it seems like a really small thing to do, to dress a kid for school, I think,Cheap Soccer Cleats, has a huge ripple effect."
Hopkins works full time for My New Red Shoes and runs the organization from her home in Menlo Park. Her husband,http://parajumpersoutletdanmark.albirank.net/, Adam Hopkins, who works in the investment field, serves on the finance committee. For the first two years, Hopkins worked with homeless shelters and social services agencies in San Mateo and Santa Clara; she is now expanding services to San Francisco. My New Red Shoes serves children from 5 to 18,http://parajumpersjakkernorgejacketkodiak.olimx.com/, and Hopkins has 85 volunteers.
"The bulk of volunteers come during the summers and package the gift cards and shoes," Hopkins said. "We also have volunteers who sew little gift bags for the kids."
For Hopkins,http://woolrichoutlet.albirank.net/, it is important that the donations from My New Red Shoes are gifts instead of handouts, so each one is personalized with the child's name on it.
"The first year that we did the back-to-school drive, we gave the children brand-new clothing and shoes," said Hopkins. "To me, the aspect of it being brand-new is very important because these kids do get a lot of hand-me-downs. They are going to their shelters and searching through what has been donated. There's something very different about choosing your own outfit with the tag attached and having it be just yours. There's something really confidence building in that - it's special."
Hopkins found that children wanted to pick out their own styles of clothing and most of her donors wanted to write checks to My New Red Shoes. Now the group gives away $50 gift cards to Old Navy.
My New Red Shoes started a program in 2006 called , which helps children understand the problem of homelessness. "We try to tell kids that even looking a homeless person in the eye instead of pretending that they're not there is a gift to them. They are human beings," she said. "We try to shoot down the stereotype of homelessness, the guy on the street with the cardboard box or the 'bag lady.' In fact, the 5-year-old child is the typical homeless person in our community."
Each week, The Chronicle features a Bay Area resident who has won a Jefferson Award for making a difference in his or her community. The awards are administered by the for Public Service, a national foundation that honors community service. Bay Area residents profiled in The Chronicle are also featured on -TV and
