On a Mission to go through the real Bay area
At Café La Boheme on 24th Street two young, handsome gay men sip organic green tea extract from paper cups while sharing last night's leftover movie popcorn from a butter-stained brown paper bag in the morning. Next door a Latino political organizer agitates loudly in Spanish for telecomutting saves gas via a tinny megaphone; no one pays attention. A classic African-American man pushes a shopping cart past a storefront selling plaster Catholic lawn statuary and shiny Jewish Menorahs. The sweet smell of pastries from the Mexican panaderia mingles using the spicy scents from a Salvadorean taqueria. It's another wonderful morning in the Mission District of Bay area.
A rowdy 50 square blocks running from 24th as much as 16th Street, the District is definitely an easily walked, thriving community where you will find French cafes,Peuterey Uomo Jacket, Irish pubs, Chinese groceries, Italian delis,Parajumpers Jakke Salg, Mexican taquerias, Scandinavian bakeries, anarchist squats, roger vivier heels sale online store, Spanish tapas bars, woolrich winter coats, Caribbean salsa clubs, Armenian florists,http://duveticaukoutlet.halod.com/, Modern bookstores,http://discountnikesoccershoes.webmium.com/, Victorian mansions and even a Pirate Shop. It's the entire world in a village, a spicy sociological soup.
Before the Franciscan fathers arrived 150 years ago to construct a mission, it was mostly a swamp,Woolrich Damen Parka, which might explain why some of the Victorian houses take presctiption a tilt. (Some might say the entire Mission is a bit off-kilter.)
After the gold rush of the 1850s, wave after wave of immigrants flooded in. Gorgeous Italianate, stick-style, Queen Anne and Victorian homes dot the whole Mission. Many commercial buildings have been repainted with sharp, colourful murals in the Diego Rivera tradition of magic realism.
La Boheme on 24th Street personifies the rough and ready neighbourhood. The café's walls are covered with funky old jazz and blues record covers. The menu proudly proclaims a wide assortment of politically correct coffees, thoughtfully handpicked by humble, soft-spoken peasants who co-own organic farmer-run collectives in Central American countries formerly abused by American-trained paramilitaries. Start the walking tour here; the Mission, discount giuseppe zanotti sneakers, as you will see, is really a study in socio-political contradictions.
Nearby on downscale Mission Street, paleta vendors stroll the crowded sidewalks selling frozen fruit popsicles out of pushcarts, a Latino tradition. Consignment stores mix with defunct movie houses converted into shops dispensing discount shirts and cheap shoes. Drug dealers spend time at night.
West on gentrified Valencia Street, local hipsters moan about the trendy upscale restaurants and organic produce stores replacing machine shops and old warehouses. Step briskly into Good Vibrations, a adult toy store run by a cheerful number of brawny lesbians selling $10 million worth of erotic products annually. No, Dorothy, piumini duvetica outlet, we aren't in Kansas anymore. At Lucca's Deli on 22nd, you can goggle in the profusion of imported Italian cheeses and made-on-the-spot pastas.
In the hole-in-the-wall Havana Social Club, the neighborhood Latin intelligentsia jams the tiny bar nightly to speak "progressive" politics. Fidel could be right in your own home. Botanica Yoruba at 998 Valencia sells icons and oils in the Santeria religion of West Africa; strange potions waft with the air along with pulsing rhythms. Actually, the entire Mission District throbs with music. Bookstores sell anarchist tracts and science fiction cult classics. But the hippest address in the Mission is 826 Valencia, where you can maintain stocks of fistfuls of old lard and stinky fish guts, peruse faded treasure maps and assorted pirate paraphernalia, or purchase the latest in hip West Coast literature. Novelist Dave Eggers, of best-selling A Staggering Work of Heartbreaking Genius, runs the weirdest store in town--a lure for local children in the future in and write creative fiction in a workshop hidden in back.
Nearby, Paxton Gate displays a decent choice of gigantic preserved insects. The Oxygen Bar at 795 Valencia entices you to definitely wallow in plush plastic couches upholstered in outlandish shades of puce and lavender while enjoying a hefty snort of pure oxygen via a nozzle your nose. End your tour at the Bombay Ice Creamery at 548 Valencia near 16th, inside an East Indian department store, where a staggering choice of chicoo,http://rogervivieronlinesale.olimx.com/, fig, masala, cashew/raisin, rose, cardamom and chai-flavoured lassis and ice creams await your palate.
In the two blocks around 16th and Valencia, 37 different restaurants vie for the business. You are able to eat the right path around the world and it is only a ten-minute cab ride back downtown to your hotel for any nightcap.
