The medical world has been abuzz in the past few weeks following the alleged HIV transmission to a patient due to negligence of standard dental practice procedures.

Dr. Wayne Harrington of Tulsa, Oklahoma allegedly treated a patient who then tested positive for HIV and Hepatitis C without other known causes. Of course without sounding judgemental, these sensational stories always seem to come out U.S and I often wonder about the authenticity of such allegations.

Anyway, apparently the claim prompted the woolrich bologna Oklahoma Board of Dentistry to carry out a surprise inspection of Harrington?s Dental clinic on March 18 2013, where numerous issues were discovered.

Among them were (allegedly) the following

The pouring bleach onto wounds until they turned www.achbanker.com/home.php white

A rusty set of tools that was being used in daily practice,

The use of expired vials of drugs, allowing dental barbour uk outlet assistants to administer medicine without license,

Re-using of needles, use of tools that were damaged beyond sterilization capabilities and negligence to oversee drug procedures and sterilization first-hand.

Dental staff reported that his clinic had served to a high number of patients who are carriers of infectious disease.

I personally find this incredibly hard to believe that such practice even took place and you wonder what sort of staff he had working for him who tolerated these conditions. It did however make me think immediately of Dr Jayant Mukundray Patel, the American Surgeon who was employed as Director of Surgery in Bunderberg base Hospital, Queensland in 2003, after being disqualified in the US several years prior. His gross incompetence (leading to several deaths) dated back to the 1980's, yet no one checked his medical registration AND he was employed up at Bunderberg for 2 years before becoming the centre of the massive 2005 Australian Medical Scandal. air jordan pas cher What took them so long!!

I don't know the depth of the Harrington case yet I believe that the most shocking aspect to the medical world, and even more to the general public, is the fact that Harrington is a Medicaid provider. hollister sale Medicaid is the United States health program for individuals and families with low incomes and resources. You can imagine the impact with a huge population of patients being treated in his clinic.... around 7000 was the recorded number, although I'm only going by what I have read in the media.

As a result, the Tulsa Health Department advised all of the 7,000 patients treated by Harrington?s clinic, be tested hollister outlet sale for possible contraction of HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. Imagine the magnitude of this, not only the fear and outrage yet the logistics of the task!!! And not only those 7000 people but also the people around them who may have possibly contracted the blood-borne diseases through exposure. I had this image in my head as I was reading about it... remember the movie 'Outbreak' with Renee Russo.... or 'The Blob'... you know those ridiculous Hollywood drama's of uncontrollable disease manifestation.

While generally, risks of transmission of HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C through dental practice is rare, it's possible and needs to be treated as serious. I clearly think this is an extremely rare occurrence and as a patient it just takes common sense to choose wisely, yet it's out there and we need to be mindful as patients and practitioners. As a practitioner, just follow protocol, it's that simple and as a patient, choose your services for general discipline and respect for standard protocol. It's most important to validate the existence of proper license and registration, not only of the practice itself, but also the individual dental staff. This is particularly necessary when visiting a dental clinic for dental education in jordan pas cher less developed countries. I have known many people who have gone to Thailand for cheap Dental work and cosmetic procedures because it's a fraction of the cost of Western countries. For the most part, it's all above board, although personally I would not take the risk unless it was minor works or emergency treatment. If you choose this path, be mindful of the condition of tools being used in practice. They must be free of rust and such spots, and should be regularly and properly sterilized. Needles should not be reused. Watch the practitioner opens the sterile pouch and if they don't... question them.

A more obvious indicator in judging the health practice of any existing clinic is the cleanliness of the environment. Proper segregation and waste disposal must be practiced, needle and sharps container present, no waste must be in sight the moment a patient enters the clinic area. jordan pas cher Another indicator is the proper donning of uniform and protective gear such as gloves and protective eyewear for all personnel carrying out dental duties. Dental assistants and secretaries may also www.vivid-host.com/barbour.htm be questioned if you are unsure. References among trusted people or through online testimonials are also a hollister france great method in the decision making process.

As dental professionals, standard clinical protocols are available on various websites such as the American Dental Association, the Australian Dental Association. AHPRA and the Dental Board of Australia.... or the World Health Organization?s. In order to gain trust, visibility must be practiced towards patients, especially those with dental fear. In addition, all aspects of procedures must be clearly explained without the patient asking. Train staff to communicate effectively and don't neglect to watch over their independent tasks every once in a while.

Standard clinical protocols were crafted because they have risen from a need to eradicate health risks, therefore there is no room for being lax when it www.mansmanifesto.com comes to louboutin execution of existing health structures, and there is always room for improvement
